Probing cross modal interactions in the perception of object motion and self-motion. How the brain integrates information from the different senses is not yet understood. This project aims first, to uncover how the brain integrates sound and visual information when perceiving moving objects and second, to probe more complex sensory interactions between sound, vision, and our vestibular senses when perceiving self-motion. How the brain integrates information from the different senses is not yet understood. This project aims first, to uncover how the brain integrates sound and visual information when perceiving moving objects and second, to probe more complex sensory interactions between sound, vision, and our vestibular senses when perceiving self-motion. This project will expand Australia's knowledge base, strengthen collaborative ties between Australia and Japan, and provide unique training opportunities for Australian and Japanese students. Publication of research in top-ranking journals will further promote Australian science abroad. Results will lead to improvements in the design of human-machine interfaces in both industry and entertainment.Read moreRead less
Diagnosis of Reference Flow Control Alerts for the Identification of Malicious Event Sequences (DiagRF). There are a reported two billion computer attacks worldwide per year. Many of these attacks require a skilled human to decipher them and to develop the "signatures" by which they can be detected. There are a reported two billion computer attacks worldwide per year. Many of these attacks require a skilled human to decipher them and to develop the "signatures" by which they can be detected. The main outcome of this project will be fundamental knowledge regarding how information flows can be tracked and then forensically analysed in a distributed computer system or network in order to enable the automatic characterization of certain classes of attacks. This new approach will enable the automatic development of attack signatures and thus the detection of such attacks. The project will lead to the development of a prototype which implements the automatic analysis and characterization of such attacks to provide proof of concept.Read moreRead less
Visuomotor Adaptation and Stimulus Response Compatibility: Basic Mechanisms and Safety Implications for Heavy Equipment. This project will explore mechanisms of human visuomotor adaptation using a directional stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) paradigm. The latter refers to the greatly enhanced performance for ?natural? pairings of control movement directions and system output directions. The outcomes are both theoretical (understanding basic processes) and applied (design and training gui ....Visuomotor Adaptation and Stimulus Response Compatibility: Basic Mechanisms and Safety Implications for Heavy Equipment. This project will explore mechanisms of human visuomotor adaptation using a directional stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) paradigm. The latter refers to the greatly enhanced performance for ?natural? pairings of control movement directions and system output directions. The outcomes are both theoretical (understanding basic processes) and applied (design and training guidelines for equipment in construction, mining, transport and aerospace industries). The issue is also significant both theoretically, since models of adaptation and SRC phenomena have not previously been combined, and practically, as serious heavy equipment accidents can result from designs that are not based on sound human performance principles.Read moreRead less
CHAMP GPS-Altimetry. The proposed research project aims to develop a novel application for the Global Positioning System (GPS), namely the use of GPS signals reflected from sea- or ice-surfaces and received by Low-Earth-Orbiter (LEO) for determination of these surface heights. Data from the German satellite CHAMP will be used for this purpose, for selected regions in Antartica. CHAMP covers areas not visited by other remote sensing satellites. The Fellow is instrumental for obtaining and process ....CHAMP GPS-Altimetry. This work provides a means for Australian science and management agencies to apply a method for accurately mapping shallow coastal environments. The work will build Australian research capability by developing new collaborations among experienced researchers; as well as allowing the Australian teams to benchmark their proposed methods internationally. Nationally, the work will strengthen international research experience and generate opportunities for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers to link into leading-edge international research networks. This work will also allow us to build strong ongoing collaborations between research teams in Australia and their counterparts overseas (specifically USA, Canada, UK and Germany). Read moreRead less
Supercomputer Simulation of Multiscale Dynamic Behaviour in Multiphase Deformable Porous Media. This project will establish and consolidate links between leading groups in China and Australia to develop a new and unique multiscale computational model and algorithm for simulating multiphase nonlinear behaviours of the porous media under dynamic loading conditions, and improve technology transfer between the two groups by the mobility of the ARC International Fellow. This will aid Australian geoscience and mining industry, such as in HFR geothermal/UCG energy facility design, construction, risk assessment and production and could help Australia shift away from greenhouse gases and become a world leader in the emerging worldwide HFR geothermal/UCG industry.Read moreRead less

This collaborative project aims to develop an environmentally acceptable, cost effective process for the recovery of gold from thiosulfate leachate. Development of this process will remove one of the barriers to the acceptance of thiosulfate leaching over conventional cyanide extraction, leading to substantial benefits to the gold industry and the environment. A successful outcome in the research project would also lead to export earnings resulting from technology transfer and an enhanced reputation for high quality research.Read moreRead less
