Summary
Mature red and white blood cells develop from hemopoietic stem cells in the adult bone marrow. The production of red blood cells is primarily controlled by the hormone erythropoietin (epo). The availability of this hormone in a recombinant form has aided in the treatment of numerous forms of anaemia resulting from kidney failure, malignancies, and AIDS. Previously we had identified that the protein Lyn must be present inside primitive red blood cells for epo to stimulate them to become mature fu ....Mature red and white blood cells develop from hemopoietic stem cells in the adult bone marrow. The production of red blood cells is primarily controlled by the hormone erythropoietin (epo). The availability of this hormone in a recombinant form has aided in the treatment of numerous forms of anaemia resulting from kidney failure, malignancies, and AIDS. Previously we had identified that the protein Lyn must be present inside primitive red blood cells for epo to stimulate them to become mature functional cells. We have identified six molecules which interact with Lyn in red blood cells. We have shown that amolecule called HS1 is important for epo function in individual red blood cells and now we plan to investigate its functions in whole animals, including mice that lack the HS1 gene. We have also shown that a molecule called Trip1 is important for red blood cell development. Interestingly, this molecule also interacts with the thyroid hormone receptor and can influence the effects of epo and thyroid hormone on red blood cell development. The interplay between these two hormones will be looked at in more detail both at the cell and whole animal levels in normal mice and those lacking the thyroid hormone receptor gene. The third Lyn binding molecule we isolated is a novel gene-we have named it ankyrin repeat protein in line with the molecules it is related to. This gene is expressed in red blood cells and we aim to investigate what role it plays in the development of these cells. The fourth gene is also novel and is closely related to another called AFAP-110, which can exert effects on the structure of a cell. Its role in red blood cell structure will also be investigated. Finally, the last two molecule we have identified are both novel and are unrelated to any other known proteins. Keeping Kinship in Mind will extend into the philosophy of the social sciences the productive interactions between philosophers and scientists that are an internationally recognized research strength of Australian philosophy of science. Between a hot place & hypoxia: Quantifying fish-kill risk in inland rivers. Native fish populations in Australian ephemeral rivers are highly valued but are subject to widespread decline. During drought waterholes serve as critical refuges for native fish, however thermal extremes and hypoxia (lack of oxygen) have led to regular fish-kill events. This project will combine laboratory ecophysiology investigations and novel field monitoring techniques to develop a next-generation fish habitat model for stakeholders to use to assess fish-kill risks and plan for restoration. The philosophical foundations of women’s rights: a new history, 1600-1750. This project aims to show that the history of women’s rights is much longer and richer than previously thought. There is a common perception that the notion of women’s rights first emerged in the late eighteenth century. This project expects to generate a new understanding of feminist history by investigating texts calling for the recognition of women’s dignity, worth, nobility, and excellence (cognate concepts to rights) ....The philosophical foundations of women’s rights: a new history, 1600-1750. This project aims to show that the history of women’s rights is much longer and richer than previously thought. There is a common perception that the notion of women’s rights first emerged in the late eighteenth century. This project expects to generate a new understanding of feminist history by investigating texts calling for the recognition of women’s dignity, worth, nobility, and excellence (cognate concepts to rights) in England and Europe from 1600 to 1750, against the backdrop of the rise of Cartesianism. The anticipated outcome is greater awareness of an enduring feminist tradition within the history of philosophy. While science is more accessible than ever, we are increasingly faced with a scientific world-view that is antithetical to the way we see the world and experience ourselves in it. This project will consider the tension between the scientific picture of the world ....Examining scientific, philosophical, and folk perspectives on time=. This project aims to consider three very different physical theories, each of which reconciles quantum mechanics and general and special relativity in a different way. While science is more accessible than ever, we are increasingly faced with a scientific world-view that is antithetical to the way we see the world and experience ourselves in it. This project will consider the tension between the scientific picture of the world and our experience of the world, and aims to reconcile the two by bridging the gap between lived experience and scientific findings. Reduction of risk in exploration for petroleum liquids. Australia has an urgent need to establish additional reserves of crude oil. A feature of petroleum exploration in recent decades has been discovery of vast reserves of natural gas but an inability to replace our diminishing reserves of crude oil. This proposal seeks to document policy developments at federal, state and school systems in relation to boys' schooling and measure their effectiveness within a gender equity framework. It also seeks to document and evaluate the effectiveness of school structural and pedagogical reforms geared to better meeting the educational needs of boys without detracting from the education of girls.
