The program aims to understand the mechanisms regulating Brain Plasticity - this recently discovered property of the brain to respond to environmental stimuli, both physiological and pathological, by producing new functional neurons. Specifically, the program will discover how the brain's stem cells are stimulated to produce new neurons. This understanding will significantly expand our knowledge of how the brain develops, and how functions, like memory, are modulated by neuronal replacement. Discoveries will underpin the development of, in association with Australia's biotechnology sector, a new generation of therapeutics, which treat neurological diseases, like Stroke, by stimulating the production of functional neurons.Read moreRead less
Using Converging Methodologies to Understand Episodic and Semantic Memory. The use of four converging methodologies and a new objective measure of implicit/explicit memory will produce a more fundamental understanding of the relationship between pre-existing and episodic memories. The results will be relevant to the current debate over repressed and false memories. The research will also provide more stringent tests of techniques and methods that are having a large impact in applied research ....Using Converging Methodologies to Understand Episodic and Semantic Memory. Given that many age-related degenerative disorders are associated with marked changes in learning and memory it also has implications for Australia's National Research Priority 2 "Ageing well and ageing productively". This research aims to discover the basic mechanisms that underlie memory storage and how these are modulated in an emotional context. It will also shed light on states such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress, enhancing our ability to identify new therapeutic targets for such disorders.Read moreRead less
Electrophysiological correlates of verbal and visuospatial working memory. Successful interaction with the world is dependent on "working memory". This memory system holds things in mind, while relating them to the past and planning for the future. A carefully controlled task, presented on a computer screen, systematically increases the number of items to be kept in mind. Accuracy and speed of matching the items are measured. The results will contribute to a theory of what processes are used ....Electrophysiological correlates of verbal and visuospatial working memory. Single and dual process models of recognition memory: Reconciliation of behavioural, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging data. Advanced brain scanning technologies are increasingly used to study human memory. As well as being important for our basic understanding of memory, they also tell us how memory is affected by normal development, ageing, disease, and injury. Unfortunately, because these technologies are so new, a gap has opened up between our psychological understanding of memory and the physiological events measured by the scanning technologies. This has created a problem for how we should interpret the results that are found. The present project aims to close this gap by applying new research methodologies and theoretical insights based on our previous research.Read moreRead less
Assessing gene function in the developing brain using zebrafish as a model system. As the average life expectancy in western countries rises there is an increasing incidence of mental health problems. As the average life expectancy in western countries rises there is an increasing incidence of mental health problems. Therapeutic approaches to both Alzhemier's and Parkinson's disease, as well as to brain injury following stroke, rely on a thorough understanding of how the brain develops. This is consistent with the everyday principle that if you want to fix something that is broken, then you need to understand how it is put together in the first place. This project seeks to understand how the normal brain is wired together in the embryo and, in doing so it will expose novel targets for therapy in the aged.Read moreRead less
Role of 3'-phosphorylated phosphoinositides in neurosecretion. Neurons communicate through the release of neurotransmitter by synaptic vesicles. Minute changes underlie normal processes such as memory and modifications of neurotransmitter level contribute to a number of neurological diseases. I am interested in deciphering the role of phosphoinositides, an inner membrane-based lipid, during steps leading to the fusion of a synaptic vesicle with the plasma membrane. I have recently discovered that phosphatidylinositol-3 phosphate production was critical for the vesicle to acquire the competence to fuse with the plasma membrane. This project aim to understand by which mechanism this lipid interacts with the release machinery to promote such priming step.Read moreRead less
