Partnering With Local Government Councils For Scalable Physical Activity Promotion In Community Parks
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,060,745.00
Summary
Aerobic & resistance-based physical activity (PA) levels are alarmingly low in Australia. Council parks are ideal locations for community PA but these facilities are underutilised. There’s a need to partner with Councils to investigate strategies to promote aerobic & resistance-based PA in parks. Partnering with Councils we will evaluate eCoFit, a multi-component intervention involving installation of outdoor fitness equipment with a linked innovative smartphone App, education & social support.
Peer Support In Maintaining Physical Activity And Health Following An Exercise Training Intervention For Cancer Survivors: A Randomised Controlled Trial.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$148,260.00
Summary
With improved screening and treatment, the number of cancer survivors in our ageing population continues to grow. However, a very high number have poor quality of life and reduced functional capacity. Exercise addresses these problems, yet very few cancer survivors exercise regularly. This study will combine high intensity intermittent exercise with peer support for cancer survivors to maintain regular exercise and their health in a community setting.

A RESEARCH NETWORK PROPOSAL ON THE BIOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND PRIMARY CARE DYNAMICS OF AGEING
. Australian ageing research is dispersed across bioscience, social science and primary care organisations. Advances in healthy, productive ageing require connection of these three vital links. Bioscience and social science groupings are engaged in generating the evidence that primary care experts need to promote healthy ageing. Primary care experts also need to act as ?direction finders? for research on ageing so that the right questions are addressed. All these groups are relatively under-funded and poorly connected. The HA-PI Network will connect and support them to over-come barriers to the implementation of existing research and to create innovations for the future.Read moreRead less
Protecting The Mental Health Of Children And Child Care Workers
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
Creating healthy social environments is essential to preventing mental illness. Child care is a work and care environment that is likely to influence providers’ and children’s mental health. Our multidisciplinary investigation will yield Australia's first major body of knowledge on the socio-economic determinants of health and health inequalities over the life course. It will point the way towards policies that can promote health and reduce the health inequalities experienced by disadvantaged individuals and families. It will indicate how improving the health of ageing Australian men and women can increase productivity and reduce needs for health services during the rapid population ageing that lies ahead. Comparisons with England will inform policy choices. We will train researchers who will play a future role in building Australia's evidence base to guide constructive policies to 2020 and beyond.Read moreRead less

Excessive drinking is estimated to cost the Australian community $7,560 million each year, representing 22% of all drug-related harm. Alcohol is a significant contributor to the occurrence of violence and crime. It is estimated that up to 70% of incidents attended by the police, and 77% of street offences such as assaults and malicious damage to property, are alcohol-related. It is also estimated that 70% to 80% of night-time single-vehicle accidents are alcohol-related. A large proportion of assaults, offensive behaviour, malicious damage to property and drink driving occur following excessive drinking at licensed premises such as hotels and registered clubs. The risk of harm arising from the consumption of alcohol on licensed premises can be reduced by modifying such factors as service of alcohol to intoxicated patrons, service-supply of alcohol to underage patrons, management practices (eg. late closing) and environmental factors (eg. poor lighting). Auditing of licensed premises is an approach currently used by authorities to ensure compliance with licensing requirements. However, such audits do not focus on harm reduction and do not incorporate best practice audit and behaviour change features. No controlled studies have reported the effectiveness of such an audit approach in reducing the risk of violence and crime emanating from hotels and registered clubs. The proposed study aims to assess the effectiveness of a Responsible Hospitality Audit and feedback intervention in reducing service to intoxicated and underage patrons, and in reducing assaults-malicious damage to property following alcohol consumption on licensed premises. The outcomes of this study will be improved responsible service of alcohol actions and reduced alcohol-related crime associated with premises.Read moreRead less
