Summary
Morphine can relieve breathlessness in the palliative setting. But many important questions remain. What is the best dose, should the dose change over time, do different medications provide the same relief, and how common is dyspnoea in the general population? This three part project will extend our knowledge to answer these questions. Population data will provide critical background to plan best care for future palliative patients distressed by breathlessness.
The Award Safety Net of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission. The industrial relations changes of the 1990s have altered the role of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) in prescribing and influencing the terms of employment. Its awards are now characterised as a ?safety net? and have, to a significant extent, been displaced by registered agreements as the legal instruments binding employers and employees. The project focuses on the remaining role of the safety net. What are its purposes? What are the criteria by which it is adjusted? What are the effects of the adjustments on actual wages, incomes and employment? How does the safety net relate to social welfare policies?Read moreRead less
The Allocation of Risk and Economic Slumps. The aim of this project is to construct and analyse models that identify a novel feedback mechanism in which the distribution of investment risk interacts with aggregate employment variations. It will provide a useable framework for economic policy analysis in which the distribution of wealth affects the demand for investment risk while the distribution of production risk affects the supply of labour income risk.
Achieving a Skilled and Sustainable Aged Care Workforce for Australia. Demand for aged care services in Australia has reached record levels and is set to rise steeply due to population ageing. The Productivity Commission identified the sector’s need to provide more care services, to expand consumer-directed care and to improve the quality of care. Currently, there is little evidence as to how the workforce can expand and change to meet these challenges. This project aims to provide new evidence ....Achieving a Skilled and Sustainable Aged Care Workforce for Australia. This project aims to provide new evidence on how to attract, retain and up-skill workers in a rapidly expanding demand environment, as the sector strives to achieve a sustainable and skilled workforce fit for the future needs of older Australians.Read moreRead less
Optimizing tailings dewatering through interfacial chemistry and particle interactions. This project aims to improve the dewatering behaviour of waste tailings from mineral processing activites. Dewatering and disposal of tailings containing fine particles are serious issues which confront the mineral industry. These properties will be manipulated by matching the molecular arch ....Optimizing tailings dewatering through interfacial chemistry and particle interactions. This project aims to improve the dewatering behaviour of waste tailings from mineral processing activites. Dewatering and disposal of tailings containing fine particles are serious issues which confront the mineral industry. Effective dewatering of tailings is determined by particle-solution interfacial chemistry and particle interactions. These properties will be manipulated by matching the molecular architecture and functionality of flocculants to mineral particle surface chemistry. Optimization of tails interfacial chemistry and particle interactions through conventional and non-conventional flocculants will be investigated and electoosmosis will be applied to achieve maximum dewatering behaviour. The scientific and environmental outcomes will be beneficial to all stakeholders.Read moreRead less
Working the gig economy: The organisation of digital platform work. This project aims to reveal the characteristics, motivations and relationships between the three central entities which comprise digital platform work: companies which organise work of different skill and scale in the gig economy; end-user individuals and enterprises; and digital platform workers themselves. This project investigates the organisation of platform work from the perspective of both workers and the intermediaries they use to find work. Expected outcomes will contribute g to knowledge of workforce transitions and shifting work/home boundaries This has the potential to informeffective policy responses to platform work with respect to labour law, superannuation regulation, organisational policy and social welfare regimes.Read moreRead less
Inflammatory Pathways For Novel Therapeutic Interventions In Preterm Delivery

Funding Amount
$568,006.00
Summary
Preterm birth is common and carries severe risks for the child. Existing therapies are not very successful in arresting preterm labour or improving outcomes for the fetus. We have discovered that blocking inflammatory ‘sensor’ molecules can slow labour progression. This project will (1) increase our knowledge of the inflammatory pathways that initiate early labour, and (2) define the mechanism of action and safety of a new drug that has potential for delaying preterm birth in women.

This project will greatly extend our understanding of the impact of demographic change and ageing on the workforce. It will develop a conceptual framework to strategically inform workforce development and a workforce planning model to assist Australian workplaces to respond to the challenge of demographic change and ageing. The need to develop a better understanding of, and respond to, the implications of demographic change and ageing for workforce development in Australia has been recognised nationally through the National Strategy for Ageing and is of direct relevance to the ARC's national research priority Ageing Well, Ageing Productively. The reality of China's socialist market economy: the emergence of labour segmentation and inequality. Australia's current regional and economic security is predicated on China's stability and prosperity. This project provides a unique opportunity for Australian organisations and institutions to gain a better understanding of the complex economic, regulatory and social issues that surround the problem of labour segmentation and inequality in China.
Control Of Aggregate Structure, Settling And Dewatering In Mineral Tailings Processing. Modification of aggregate structures in mineral processing will lead to improved dewatering in tailings operations. In mine site rehabilitation and tailings utilisation, technology developed in this project may save not only millions of dollars in more efficient processing and tailing deposition but also help to better reuse our limited national water resources.
