Summary
My fellowship will examine the association of RAS mutations in thyroid cancer. RAS proteins are the most mutated in cancer and I will investigate how they work in thyroid cancer. RAS mutated thyroid cancer is more likely to cause death. This grant will be based in the pioneering lab of Prof Fagin at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. It is hoped by understanding these mutations, new treatments for thyroid cancer can be developed.
Postoccidental Englishes and Rap. This project examines the conjunction between new Englishes and rap music. Applied linguistic research on world Englishes has focused predominantly on newly emergent standardized national varieties, and thus has tended to overlook the changing oral codes in domains such as popular music. By looking at the global spread of rap in relationship to the global spread of English, this project has great significance for 1.Expanding our knowledge about the implications and processes of this spread; 2. Developing a model of postoccidental Englishes that goes beyond current frameworks; and 3. Creating educational materials that can engage with student interests and desires.Read moreRead less

Intervention to combat racism towards Indigenous youth is vital given the pervasiveness and long-term consequences for academic failure, mental health costs and anti-social behaviour. Consistent with the priority of promoting andmaintaining good health and well-being, the study offers important educational and socio-economic benefits by enriching the psychosocial adjustment and life potential of Indigenous Australians. Effective intervention to address racism will enhance pro-social behaviours, self-concept, mental health, and school engagement of Indigenous secondary students and build capacity of non-Indigenous students to address racism and foster safer schools that contribute to individual, local community, and national well-being.Read moreRead less

An online collaborative design process is emerging in response to the global economy, increasing complexity of visual communication design projects and rapid developments in Internet technology. Research is required to identify and address the interdependence of various social, physical and technical factors that affect online design collaboration. The Omnium Project is an experiment that uses its unique framework to test online modes of interaction (physical) and collaboration (social) for visual communication designers. The outcome will produce an online technical-system and formalise a documented conceptual-approach for effective online collaborative design in visual communication.Read moreRead less

A new theory of Aboriginal art. The paradigms developed by scholars have a huge impact on the value of art. After the Australian artworld repositioned Aboriginal art from the frame of 'primitive art' to that of contemporary art, the price of and market for Aboriginal art increased enormously. However, Aboriginal art failed to penetrate the international contemporary artworld because the paradigms of contemporary art within which it was framed were outmoded. Through examining the production of Aboriginal art from the perspectives of its producers and recent globalised contemporary art practices, this project aims to develop a new theory of Aboriginal art that is more aligned with the thinking of current curators who set the agenda at the upper end of the market.Read moreRead less
Cinema and the Senses: Temporality of the films of Stanley Kubrick, Terrence Malick and Kumar Shahani. The resulting monograph, articles and seminars will provide new methodologies for Australian cinema studies which has tended to depend on Euro-American models. The project offers three distinct ways of thinking about an ecology of the human senses in and through cinema. The ideas on cine-synaesthesia would link up with current research on this topic in other disciplines such as neurophysiology, painting and music. My aim is to produce a new understanding of Orientalism through intensive research into the role of Ottoman elites in the development of art in nineteenth-century Constantinople. This will be the first comprehensive study of the complex web of cross-cultural interactions in the capital of the Ottoman Empire in this period, including the major art exhibitions, the Sultan's patronage and the unique collaborations between European and Ottoman women artists and patrons. The result will be a major innovation within post-colonial and feminist art histories through the inclusion of indigenous perspectives on the production and reception of Orientalist art. The outcome will be two refereed journal articles and a book entitled, The Other Orient.Read moreRead less

The project aims to identify significant indicators of development in the writing of adolescents at various stages of secondary education. There are a number of students who struggle with the demands of secondary schooling because they have not developed control over the more abstract, technical, and metaphorical language required in written assignments and examinations. This study will map the development of those linguistic resources critical to success in secondary learning, drawing on and extending Halliday's functional theory of language. An understanding of typical patterns of development will enable teachers to productively intervene in those cases where students' academic progress is impeded.
