The provision of comfort heating for domestic and commercial buildings contributes significantly to Australia's energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The project aims to develop a new roofing product which will collect and store solar energy for heating. The product integrates conventional roofing products into a solar collector and a heat store. Materials that melt/freeze at suitable temperatures will be used for heat storage. The project involves developing a mathematical model and a prototype design. In addition to fulfilling the conventional function of roofing products including thermal and sound insulation, the prototype is intended to be aesthetically acceptable and easily compatible with current building practices.Read moreRead less
A new approach to systematic blockage detection and mapping in water distribution systems. Techniques to non-destructively probe and map features are common in medicine (MRI, Ultrasound, X-rays) and in other areas such as geophysics. No analogous techniques exist for water distribution systems that are an integral part of society's infrastructure. The location and mapping of blockages using pressure pulses is the focus of this research and our industry partner wants to be the first to develop ....A new approach to systematic blockage detection and mapping in water distribution systems. Techniques to non-destructively probe and map features are common in medicine (MRI, Ultrasound, X-rays) and in other areas such as geophysics. No analogous techniques exist for water distribution systems that are an integral part of society's infrastructure. The location and mapping of blockages using pressure pulses is the focus of this research and our industry partner wants to be the first to develop this technology. Experimental verification of the technique will be carried out in laboratory and field tests. The new methodology will have a significant economic impact with major savings of operation and maintenance costs for water networks worldwide.Read moreRead less

Flow-on benefits will also be created for Australian organizations involved in the manufacturing of electric vehicles and portable devices.Read moreRead less
Green cool wine: solar powered solid adsorption refrigeration system with ice storage to provide cooling capability for wine industry. The project is to develop a solar thermal powered refrigeration system that is able to build up an ice bank (as a storage) through daily intermittent cycle, from late Australian spring. The ice bank will used in the vintage season in a winery for cooling purposes. The system is able to reduce the carbon foot print of the wineries significantly.

The project aims to develop advanced new material for multilayered packaging with high oxygen and moisture barrier properties for cost effective packaging applications. Poly Products currently imports and uses some polymer as its key component for controlling barrier property of their food packaging. However, the new nanostructured material when sandwiched between less expensive materials in a multilayered packaging film will yield excellent barrier properties, leading to extended shelf life of different food products. The new smart material will generate significant material saving and replace the imported polymer, and will secure export market of the product in Asia -Pacific region.Read moreRead less
High power density, low cogging torque and low-cost micro-scale wind turbine generator system utilising soft magnetic composite materials. This project will develop a low-cost, high-performance and high-ef?ciency micro-scale wind turbine generator using a new magnetic material consisting of iron powder, which can be easily pressed into any desirable shape. This allows considerably simpli?ed manufacturing, greater design ?exibility and ease of scaling to higher output powers.

This project aims to determine the best ways to communicate wine research and to design tools to support research adoption. Adoption of research relies on effective use of information and technology by employees. Research into employees’ information practices in the workplace has been conducted in health care, education and other areas; however, the wine industry’s use of information and technology for adoption is unexplored. The project plans to assess the strategies used to share research with winemakers and grape growers (e.g. seminars, websites, social media), from information behaviour or web useability perspectives, to ensure industry needs are met appropriately. This research aims to have a direct and immediate impact on the wine industry. In addition to the immediate impact of new research innovations that will be implemented by our partner wine companies, the project will also change industry-wide approaches to extension. The partner organisations use extension strategies to showcase new innovations and our research will assess these organisations’ current practices, providing evidence to shape the design of future activities in Australia.Read moreRead less

This project takes as its starting point the investigation of why medical practitioners in a rural community have been resistant to adopt a community based health information system designed to routinely collect, analyse and disseminate information regarding patient treatment. The project seeks to identify the deeper reasons for the resistance through analysis of the broader context of information systems in General Practice Medicine, with particular attention to the way Government health informatics initiatives fit with professional and practical priorities. The project will develop guidelines for acceptability of systems in this context and contribute to the broader knowledge management literature.Read moreRead less
Investigation of the coupled dependence of concentrated solar radiation and combustion in a novel solar hybrid technology. The project will develop the models necessary for the optimisation of a novel solar-combustion hybrid technology and a novel heat exchanger component. It will deliver a solar thermal technology that lowers the cost of solar energy with immediate potential in off-grid sites, such as in remote mines, in Australia and throughout the world.
