The Centre of Research Excellence on Achieving the Tobacco Endgame (CREATE) will develop a strategy to make Australia smoke-free. Our multi-disciplinary research will determine which strategies are the most effective, equitable and acceptable to the public and policymakers. We will identify the barriers and enablers, and make recommendations on the optimal suite of policies to end the cigarette epidemic and reduce the healthcare burden associated with smoking related diseases.
Reducing The Health, Social And Economic Burden Of Injecting Drug Use In Australia

Summary
Injecting drug use (IDU) is a disproportionately large source of health and social harm. This CRE unites Australia’s leading scientists in the IDU field – researchers working on blood-borne virus epidemiology and treatment, overdose prevention, justice health and psychiatric health - and experts from key non-government organisations. The CRE will develop new ways to improve the health of injecting drug users, and reduce the health and social burden of IDU to the Australian community.
Mental and substance use disorders account for more years of life lost due to disability than any other disorders. These disorders often occur together (comorbidity), yet, people with both mental and substance use disorders rarely have both disorders effectively treated. This CRE is a world first, tackling prevention and treatment for people with both mental and substance use disorders.
Evidence-based Mental Health Planning: Translating Evidence Into Policy And Services

The CRE will design a better mental health system for Australia. This service system will include the full range of prevention and treatment interventions using the best available scientific evidence. It will also describe how to ensure that the service system is implemented, by incorporating it into government policy. The work will be carried out across 5 of the best research centres in Australia with expertise in clinical medicine, epidemiology, service planning and implementation science.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians are up to eight times as likely to suffer death or illness as a result of alcohol use. Yet there is a critical shortage of Indigenous researchers with expertise in this field. This CRE helps build a strong and continuing network of Indigenous researchers with expertise in treating and preventing alcohol problems. The Centre will generate new knowledge, integrating efforts along the continuum of treatment and prevention.

Medicines have an important place in health and are commonly used for long periods, sometimes life-long. Using medicines wisely requires a careful balance between benefits and harmful effects. Currently, there is limited information to guide medicines use over a lifetime. Using large linked datasets, the CRE in Medicines and Ageing will generate much needed evidence about real world medicines use to support clinical and pharmaceutical policy decisions.

Antibiotic resistance is threat to international health. Most antibiotics are prescribed for acute respiratory infections. The Centre for Research Excellence in Minimising Antibiotic Resistance for Acute Respiratory Infections focuses on the major contributors to resistance: antibiotic overuse and person-to-person transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Research will inform the design, evaluation and translation of urgently needed interventions, aimed at clinicians, patients and policy-makers.
