This proposal seeks to establish a mobile, high-power diode laser facility for thermal processing of in-situ components in the power generation, defence, shipbuilding and mining industries. Diode lasers offer significant advantages for laser thermal processing over conventional CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers in terms of their output wavelength, size and efficiency. The mobile high power diode laser facility will help build a strong infrastructure for in-situ repair of worn components and is expected to reduce overall component repair costs and time.Read moreRead less

To compete in the global market, Australia needs to be in a leading position in production of light alloy components for automotive, aerospace, electronic, and bio-medical applications. The establishment of industrially viable Hydro-ECAP technology for production of bulk ultrafine grained light alloys with superior mechanical properties will lead to a major breakthrough in the use of such materials and will help transforming Australia's metal forming companies to future-oriented manufacturing industries.Read moreRead less

On the one hand, this project will make a significant contribution to the field of study on dynamics of complex mechanical systems and on the other hand, directly assist the Australian steel industry in further improving quality and productivity and thereby maintaining its competitive edge in the international marketplace. The project will benefit the nation and community in:
(i) advanced steel manufacturing technology enabling higher rolling speed, production in more advanced thin gauge rolling, and prevention of production breakdowns caused by mill chatter;
(ii) strengthened competitiveness of the local steel industry resulting in increased exports and employment;
(iii) enhanced regional economy resulting from improved technologies.Read moreRead less
Mechanics of transverse friction and roughness in cold strip rolling. The transverse friction and roughness have a significant effect on the shape and surface quality of the rolled strip. It will extend the scope of friction and roughness analysis well beyond other existing models.Read moreRead less
Development of new steel products by thin strip casting and direct thermomechanical processing. The development of strip casting is now being driven by the opportunity to produce steel products with much lower utilization of energy, land and water and lower greenhouse gas emissions. However, this process represents a radical departure from conventional steel processes and therefore the factors that determine the final properties of the strip need to be understood and controlled under high rates of change. We believe that these challenges actually represent an opportunity to develop new high performance steel products that exploit the unique processing conditions of strip casting and that can use much more recycled material as a feed.Read moreRead less

A study of the effects of severe plastic deformation by ECAP on the crystallographic anisotropy and the resulting microstructure-property relationships. The project will assist in improving the technology of manufacture of aluminium can body-stock, a large industry world-wide and help to keep Australian manufacture competitive with the overseas product. Because the Industry Partner has manufacturing activities in regional centres, it will also assist in strengthening regional industry.
Stamp forming of lightweight fibre-metal laminate systems. A key criteria in the development of new vehicles is weight reduction. The aim of this project is to investigate the formability of fibre metal laminates (FMLs) for automotive applications. These hybrid material systems have significant advantages in terms of strength, weight, noise and impact reduction over metals. The major research issue addressed here is how can such materials be formed for volume production.

The contact vibration energy between rolling elements and races is low due to the low speed of the motion, and thus the vibration produced is masked by the general running vibration and is not readily distinguishable from the background vibration of the rotating structure. The aim of this project is to use remote sensors to collect information about the state of horizontal slew bearings and develop an analysis technique that will predict the short to medium term behaviour of horizontal slew bearings. The technique has the potential of saving $3.2 million in loss production per an unplanned breakdown of a slew bearing in a steel plant.

A knowledge of the relationships between input variables and measured output states of a rolling mill should enable significant improvements to dimensional stability of the product being produced and to an increase in availability of the rolling mill. The aim of this project is to develop a methodology for developing relationships between input variables that contribute to the measured output states of fully assembled rolling mill stands and this enable the operator to identify and avoid undesirable mill states.Read moreRead less
