Summary
A ROBOTIC NMR SPECTROMETER FOR ACCELERATED DRUG DISCOVERY. The aim is to establish a facility that will use a robotic NMR instrument to help in the characterisation of drug-protein interactions and in the discovery of new drugs or agrichemicals. The significance is that with the wealth of new information arising on protein sequences from genomics programs there is an urgent need to accelerate the rate of discovery of ligands that bind to these proteins. Such ligands may provide useful drug leads or help in defining the function of newly discovered proteins. The outcomes will be new knowledge on protein structure and function, and potentially, new bio-active molecules.Read moreRead less

Collaborative remote access will be developed for sophisticated instrumentation, including instruments planned for the Replacement Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron. A structure database service with cross disciplinary content and versatile visualisation and analysis capabilities will further exemplify smart information use. The internet services will ultimately harness the Grid, enabling linkage into other national and international Grid systems. Encompassing physics, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry, and catalysing interaction across these disciplines, the MMSN will impact all five National Research Priority 3 goals.Read moreRead less

The Molecular and Materials Structure Network will propel leading-edge Science by building powerful e-Science resources that will compel innovative collaborations of profound National benefit. Remote access will be developed for structure determination instruments, including the Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron. A structure database with cross disciplinary content and powerful visualisation and analysis capabilities will exemplify "smart information use". Encompassing physics, computer science, chemistry and biochemistry, and catalysing interaction across these disciplines, the MMSN will impact all four National Research Priority 3 goals, and will be linked to other national and international Grids to become part of the emerging global Grid.Read moreRead less

e-Research Infrastructure for the Molecular and Materials Structure Sciences. Understanding molecular and materials structure in atomic detail is vital to a knowledge-based economy and a healthy society. The development of smart materials, nanotechnological devices, hydrogen storage materials, molecular switches, magnets and sensors, for example, depends on knowledge of three-dimensional atomic structure. Cures for illnesses such as SARS, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease and understanding the aging ....e-Research Infrastructure for the Molecular and Materials Structure Sciences. Cures for illnesses such as SARS, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease and understanding the aging process depends on knowledge of biomolecular structure. The deployment and development of automation-enhanced remote access to structural instruments through the web will greatly enhance Australian structure-based research, and make this science accessible to the public.
