Summary
Religion and Urban Development in India: Planning Sustainable Cities. This project argues that religion influences urban development in India, and must inform policy. India's scale and speed of urbanisation makes its sustainable urban development critical globally, yet modernist urban planning has failed to address slum growth, poverty, gender inequality and ecological crises. Securing the Australian city: the governance of critical infrastructure in climate change. This project focuses on the securitisation and governance of critical urban infrastructure (that is energy, water, transport, communication) within the context of climate change. The research examines how critical infrastructure is framed as a key security issue, and the implications for climate governance in Australian cities.
A knowledge base to model the relationship between individual's lives and their communities. This research will 1) model the impact of ?communities? on residents' lives, and study the inter-relationships between community assets and structure, the life-situations of residents, collective and individual well-being; and, 2) study the relationship between people's levels of social connectedness and community affiliation on community functioning. The overwhelming majority of local governments in Australia are developing cultural plans and placemaking strategies. Despite claims that cultural planning can achieve an ever-expanding range of social, aesthetic, economic and cultural objectives, there has been little systematic academic research investigating these claims, their framing assumptions, or the shifting relationship between place, social change, culture, art and policy within specific localities. Through a combination of policy analysis, case study and ethnographic research, this innovative interdisciplinary Project will explore cultural planning at both micro and macro levels. This project intends to examine how four regional centres navigate the socio-economic challenges of an increasing Indigenous disability population in a context of national reform. Across OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, including Australia, disability income support policy has become central to national economic policy. Displacement of small cultural producers and the consequent dispersal of local networks is damaging to the urban social and economic fabric. This research will assess the challenges to strong and thriving creative subcultures in gentrifying cities.
