Scenario planning is the process of identifying plausible futures and their inherent risks. The organisation, the network within which it is embedded, and the environment in which the network operates, form a complex system of non-linear, dynamic, interrelationships. This project will develop a continuous process of scenario planning, capturing learning about the future as it emerges. The project fuses the use of agents for intelligent data collection and negotiation with agent-based modelling to build powerful network-based scenario modelling systems for commercial applications. This outcome will place Australia on the frontier of smart information use.Read moreRead less
Multi-level analysis of human resource management systems on hospital outcomes. This project explores the relationships among human resource management systems, perceived organisational support, trust-in-management and commitment of healthcare workers. The fundamental aim is to assist hospital managers to determine where to direct their efforts to have maximum impact upon staff and hospital performance.

This project aims to examine the establishment and global diffusion of social stock exchanges and assess how such a platform may assist the nascent Australian market for impact investing. Investors and social enterprises struggle to connect, communicate and agree on measures of return. This project will examine the social systems needed to organise and sustain markets. This approach is expected to inform the development of Australia’s potential $32 billion market in providing finance to solve social problems.Read moreRead less
Factors influencing the adoption and diffusion of supply chain technology standards in Australia. This project seeks to enable more organisations to use technologies such as bar codes and radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. This project seeks to enable more organisations to use technologies such as bar codes and radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. Studies show that 3.5 per cent of sales are lost due to information inefficiencies, 30 per cent of inventory records have errors, and 60 per cent of all invoices have errors. These types of errors and losses can be reduced through use of these technologies because they enable more efficient and effective flow of goods and services. All four industry sectors we will study can benefit from these technologies: reduced errors and better service delivery in the healthcare sector; improved quality control and reduced transportation costs for primary producers; improved coordination and reduced transport related carbon emissions for automotive manufacturing and fast moving consumer goods sectors.Read moreRead less

Recent policy announcements by the State and Federal Governments have centred on the need to explore the use of process management principles, normally applied to manufacturing industry, to health services management. This multidisciplinary project addresses one of the most pressing needs in health services - provision of methods to reduce patient queues and waiting times in emergency departments through interactive computing simulation to visualise and plan work process improvements. This smart use of information will benefit hospital managers, patients and their carers, is transferable to other health contexts, and by optimising resource usage has the potential to help build Australian (health) business.Read moreRead less

The project supports the priorities of: ageing well and promoting an innovative culture and economy and links to the goal of social inclusion. It will contribute significantly towards improved performance and efficiency in an increasingly important sector which contributes to the national economy and provides both care and employment to many Australians. Rapidly increasing demands and challenges require effective, competent leadership to deal with competing tensions, in turn resulting in a more resilient and sustainable industry. This will contribute to more stability, reduced staff turnover and improved outcomes for residents/clients, including through new and innovative workplace culture and practices.Read moreRead less

Rural and regional Australians account for more than a third of the population. Compared with their urban counterparts, they face higher mortality rates and experience higher hospitalisation rates. They face significant challenges in accessing healthcare services and expertise. This research will provide guidelines on the effective and efficient use of virtual services technologies to provide more equitable access to healthcare for rural and regional Australians. This will enable healthcare providers and government agencies to select and deliver appropriate technology solutions yielding improved quality of care at a reduced cost. Access delays will be reduced through localised healthcare delivery.Read moreRead less
