Transforming city spaces: street art, urban cultures, transnational networks. The appearance of urban spaces has a dramatic impact upon the lives of the citizens who live in them. In comparing a range of local and international cities, this project investigates ways in which street art, a new cultural practice, has been transforming experiences of cities, cultural practices and communities.
Curating Cities: the social and ecological potential of public art practice. This project researches the contribution of public art to eco-sustainable development, focusing on world’s best practice and potential benefits to Sydney and cities in general. It seeks to establish how the arts can promote environmentally beneficial behaviour change and the development of green infrastructure.
Empathy and evolution: the history of emotions and the literary and visual representation of animals. A study of emotions in human and animals is a key area of contemporary research in both the sciences and humanities. It has crucial implications for our future. This project will investigate how humans have represented the emotions in literary and visual discourses from the eighteenth-century to the present.
Old Atrocities, New Media: Terror Images and the Visual-Military Complex. This research centres on the relations between twenty-first century visual technologies and the age-old practice of the massacre-atrocity. It takes as its major case study the atrocities at the end of the war in Sri Lanka in 2009. The most graphic form of knowledge about these mass deaths and rapes was produced through digitally transmitted visual images. Disability and digital TV: access, representation and reception. Digital television has the potential to lesson the social exclusion of people with disability, if it is made accessible. This project will provide a much-needed user-focused analysis of two areas of key concern to Australians with disability as the nation switches over to digital TV - access and representation.
The Development of Quantum Gravity (1957-1988): The Great Divide. The problem of quantum gravity, involving the bringing together of the two pillars of modern physics (general relativity, describing spacetime and gravity, and quantum theory, describing matter and the strong, weak and electromagnetic forces), remains unresolved despite over a century of searching. Following on from a productive pair of earlier ARC fellowship projects, this project aims to continue the historical investigation of ....The Development of Quantum Gravity (1957-1988): The Great Divide. The problem of quantum gravity, involving the bringing together of the two pillars of modern physics (general relativity, describing spacetime and gravity, and quantum theory, describing matter and the strong, weak and electromagnetic forces), remains unresolved despite over a century of searching.
