Veteran Culture and the Military Memoirs of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. This project contributes to an understanding not only of veteran culture in early nineteenth-century France and Europe, but also of the ways in which veterans across western cultures assimilate, process and reconstruct memories of war. This necessarily will lead to a better understanding of role story-telling in the construction of national histories. In addition to offering new insights that will inform scholarsh ....Veteran Culture and the Military Memoirs of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. This project contributes to an understanding not only of veteran culture in early nineteenth-century France and Europe, but also of the ways in which veterans across western cultures assimilate, process and reconstruct memories of war. This necessarily will lead to a better understanding of role story-telling in the construction of national histories. In addition to offering new insights that will inform scholarship and teaching in the field history, it will also redress a significant gap in the international literature. The findings of this study thus assist in establishing Australian historical scholarship at the forefront of international research initiatives in memory, auto-biography and memoir writing. How Scientific Theories are Confirmed: A History of Atomic Theories of Matter. This project addresses the question of how scientific theories are confirmed by experiment - a fundamentally important aspect of philosophy of science and science itself - that has yet to be definitively answered.
The research will explore the evolution of atomic theories of matter, from speculation in the seventeenth century to precise versions that were confirmed by experiment in the twentieth.

This research represents a much-needed combining of history and philosophy in this field. It will advance the understanding of how theories in the physical sciences are confirmed in a way that is anchored in an investigation of actual scientific practice.Read moreRead less
The Emergence of a Scientific Culture in Early Modern Europe. The shaping of cognitive values around scientific ones was one of the most lasting and radical effects of the Scientific Revolution, and it is one of the most distinctive features of modernity in the West. The shaping of cognitive values around scientific ones was one of the most lasting and radical effects of the Scientific Revolution, and it is one of the most distinctive features of modernity in the West. This dominance of scientific values is absent from other scientific cultures (e.g. from Greek, medieval or Chinese science) and there is nothing intrinsic to the kinds of theories and results we find in the Scientific Revolution that would explain this development. The project looks at the particular legitimatory problems that science faced in the 17th and 18th centuries, and investigates how this reshaping came about.Read moreRead less
At the crossroads of mathematics, navigation and exploration: A scientific biography of Henry Briggs (1561-1630). My project, a scientific biography of Henry Briggs (1561-1630), will investigate an important scholar who was at the centre of interacting networks of prominent mathematicians, colonists, and explorers. A study of Briggs's career will shed valuable light on the beginnings of mathematics as a viable profession in England, on the relationship between mathematics and scientific ideas concerning magnetism, and on the interactions between mathematics, exploration, and colonisation. Such an examination is increasingly important due to recent arguments concerning the role of mathematics in the Scientific Revolution.Read moreRead less
Chemical and isotopic fingerprinting of ancient porcelains and pottery. This project aims to establish provenance of ancient porcelains and pottery of archaeological or antique collection significance using trace element and lead-strontium-neodymium (Pb-Sr-Nd) isotopic compositions, which serve as fingerprints of porcelains and pottery of different places or ages. High quality multi-element and isotopic data will be obtained using facilities at ACQUIRE¡¯s state-of-the-arts geochemistry laborator ....Chemical and isotopic fingerprinting of ancient porcelains and pottery. High quality multi-element and isotopic data will be obtained using facilities at ACQUIRE¡¯s state-of-the-arts geochemistry laboratory. The results will have significant implications for investigation of ancient cultures, technology and trades, artefact authentication and even forensic studies. Established database is potentially patentable for commercialization in the antiquity market.Read moreRead less
Memory and Identity in England 1500-1700. This project will test the hypothesis that struggles to control memory were central to the redefinition of beliefs, collective identities and social structures in England, 1500 to 1700. This project will test the hypothesis that struggles to control memory were central to the redefinition of beliefs, collective identities and social structures in England, 1500 to 1700. It will focus analysis on three ways of remembering, expressed in written, visual and material media: genealogy, local history, and commemoration of the dead. The project's hypothesis and interdisciplinary method represent significant new departures in understanding the construction of identity and the pursuit of power. By studying a premodern society, this project will add depth to recent studies of memory, and open up new ways of imagining of early modern England.Read moreRead less
