This prospective study will determine how the eye diseases glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration impact on driving safety. Blindness is a very distressing sensory loss. Hereditary eye disorders account for the vision impairment in at least one-third of people who are registered as blind. These disorders cause blindness from a young age and work productivity is significantly impaired. This project will identify novel genetic factors in blinding eye disorders. Identifying these genetic factors will lead to better early detection methods for people and improved treatments to prevent the blindness.

In humans and other primates the visual system comprises evolutionary new pathways (called magnocellular or M, and parvocellular or P) superimposed on evolutionary old pathways (called koniocellular or K). These parallel pathways carry visual information from the retina, through a brain centre in the thalamus called lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), to the cerebral neocortex. Our aim is to study the role of the K pathway in visual processing.
